The Upper Guadalupe: Texas Hill Country’s hidden green ribbon

Winding through the limestone canyons of the Texas Hill Country, the Upper Guadalupe River has drawn people to its water for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence documents human habitation in the river valley dating back millennia. Tonkawa, Waco, Lipan Apache, and Karankawa peoples lived in the region long before Alonso de León named the river Guadalupe in 1689.

Today, the river remains a living ecosystem. Its clear, spring-fed waters support the Guadalupe bass, Texas’s official state fish and a species found only in Texas. Anglers may also encounter largemouth bass, sunfish, Rio Grande cichlids, carp, catfish, and gar.

Towering bald cypress trees line the banks, with gnarled roots gripping limestone bluffs and branches arching overhead to form a shaded, cathedral-like corridor. The river’s character shifts with rainfall and the seasons, from stronger spring flows to glassy pools later in the year.

Away from crowded tourist stretches, the Upper Guadalupe offers quiet, privacy, and natural beauty. Paddlers move through a river corridor that has sustained life in the Hill Country for generations.
